New Zealand Ship Toole Part In Sabang Raid
LONDON. April 25.
Admiral Somerville, speaking at a Press conference at Colombo, dismissed the Sabang raid as “just cci ordinary show-up,” and said that not a single ship was seen during the entire operation. He pointed out that Sabang was a strong, well-garrisoned outpost. Destruction of so many loaded cargoships must hurt the Japanese, particularly oil-tankers, which they can ill afford to lose owing to the heavy toll that American submarines are taking in the Pacific. He added: “Now we have a powerful fleet in the Indian Ocean which the Japs have tasted. Theier golden opportunity of taking India during the past two years no longer exists.” Admiral Somerville disclosed that one ship participating in Sabang operation was manned by New Zealanders and one or two by Australians.
