Armed Forces Appeal Board Sits In Kaikohe

(Spec.) KAIKOHE, This Day. “It’s an extraordinary and unusual attitude to take up.” remarked Mr. A. J. Magee, a member of the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board, when Mr. H. F. Guy, of Kaikohe, told the board that the parents of a youth engaged in farming had refused to sign an appeal but wished the case to be heard and adjudged by the board.

“Their reason,” stated Mr. Guy, “seems to be that they have decided to leave it to the board as to whether fighting or production is of paramount importance in the war effort. They say that so much has been published about the need for greater dairy production, but if the board takes their son they will know that fighting is still of greater importance in New Zealand.”

The chairman'(Mr. R. Coates): WJiat they perhaps do not realise is that various factors come into the picture. The appeal boards sit in the interests of essential industries as well as of the armed forces, and we can hardly adjudicate without hearing the full story. Mr. Guy: It may also be a disinclination to have it said they had appealed for their boy, but it should be realised of course that it is sometimes as much a duty to appeal as it is to allow a man to go into the forces.
