Picnic Races’ £llOO For Patriotic Funds
Appreciating the novelty of again seeing horse racing on the Kensington Fark course, Whangarei people turned out in such force to see the Whangarei Racing Club's picnic meeting for patriotic funds on Saturday that £269 was taken at the gates. With additional funds accruing from sideshows, competitions and stalls, total receipts for patriotic funds exceeded £llOO One return has still to come and with this included the total return is expected to be £llOO.
Although the weather was showery the showers were so well spaced that the public experienced little inconvenience and the day’s racing was thoroughly enjoyed. All competitions, stalls and sideshows were well patronised and did their share in swelling the receipts. The racing in nearly every event was good, with some of the finishes extremely close. The organisation for the meeting could hardly have been bettered. Officials of the club and other helpers gave willingly of their services and the result was a smoothness of operation which could hardly have been improved. If was a most enjoyable day. with a gratifying response from the public, an opportunity for horse owners to try out their animals, and a great fillip for the patriotic funds.
