Hukerenui Pilot In Night-Fighter Raid

A New Zealand Mosquito nightfighter squadron shot down two Junkers 88s on April 18 when the Germans lost 13 aircraft. One Junkers fell to Warrant-Officer R. F. D. Bourke (Fahiatua), whose navigator was Fly-ing-Officer I. C. Skudder (HukerenuD. Warrant-Officer Bourke opened fire at close range with cannon, causing the Junkers’ port engine to blow, up and the aircraft to burst into flames and dive into the sea a few miles off the English coast. The second Junkers was shot down by an English pilot, Flight-Lieutenant John Hall, who attacked dead astern, setting fire to the Junkers’ port engine and wing-root. It went down blazing in the sea and remained on the water burning for several minutes. This New Zealand squadron has now shot down 18 enemy planes.
