Say Censorship Issue Being Used To Bring Down The Government

SYDNEY, This Day.

Allegations that the issue which resulted in suppression'of the Sydney daily newspapers on Monday was being used to bring down the Government and defeat the forthcoming referendum on wider Commonwealth powers, were made by a delegate to the New South Wales Labour Council.

The council decided to sponsor a meeting to support the Minister for Information (Mr Cal well) and “to rally to the defence of the Government on this issue."

The Communist Party carried the following motion: “Whilst recognising that it was a tactical blunder by the Minister for Information to suppress the papers, the central executive of the Australian Communist Party is of the opinion that the real issue between the Press and censorship is not one of freedom of the Press but a continuation of efforts of reactionary individuals controlling the Press to defy regulations, embarrass the Labour Government and-sow disunity calculated to defeat the referendum for extended powers to the Commonwealth Parliament.”
