Destroyers Pound Bases On New Guinea Coast

SYDNEY, This Day. Hansa Bay, Madang and Alexishafen were targets for a heavy Allied attack on Monday, according to General MacArthur’s communique. Steaming close to the enemy shore, Americn destroyers pumped a hail of shells into Japanese installations, causing extensive damage and fires. Allied bombers, covering this daring attack, dropped 227 tons of bombs. Combined sea and air operations left the targets thoroughly gutted and covered with smoke. Jap. shore batteries did not attempt to engage the destroyers and there was no air interception. Catalinas raiding Woleai Island in the Carolines on Sunday night hit a 9000-ton cargo ship with a 1000-pound bomb. A 2000-ton cargo ship was also hit.

Tokio official radio says that 20 American bombers yesterday attacked Truk, causing slight damage to shore installations. The Americans lost two planes. Record of Casualties

Statistics released today show that for the month ended April 8, 5370 Jananese were killed on Bougainville Island. Total casualties in the New Britain campaign were 442 killed, 1062 wounded and 10 missing, a total of 1514 against about 10.000 Japanese dead.
