Reimbursing Town Board Member

(Special)

KAIKOHE, This Day

A “breeze”—albeit of zephyr proportions —blew in the board-room on Monday evening when members of the Kaikohe Town Board discussed; the question of reimbursing one of their number, Cmr. E. Mcrfette. for a sum of £.ll/15/- spent by him on the board's behalf in improvements to the Recreation Ground, on which the Northern Racing Club plans to hold a gymkhana on March 18. Cmr. Morfette stated that the board had previously decided to provide £lO towards this work, but he had, in all good faith, instructed the men to go on with the job and complete it. This had cost £4l/15/-, of which £lO would be found by the A. and P. Association from queen carnival funds of several years ago. He asked the board to reimburse him for the remainder The ground was useless previously and would now be usable for patriotic and other purposes. It was a job that had badly needed doing'. The chairman (Mr G. S. Penney) men ticned that the board had taken exception to the fact that the additional money had been spent without its authority. Cmr. Morfette: If I overstepped the mark, it was because the job was badly needed. I finished the job and committed the board off my own bat, but the value is there for the future benefit of the board. Captain Kindheart’s Part Cmr. S. G. Robinson: I originally moved that £4 be granted towards this work and, at Cmr. Morfette’s request, I played Captain Kindheart and moved for an increase to £lO, but I’m not Captain Kiqdheart enough to go up to £SO. Cr J. E. Hutchinson suggested that the matter be left over to the next meeting, pending a meeting of the Kaikohe A. and P. Association, but Cmr. Morfette asked that a decision be given immediately. “I have seen the job and the value definitely is there,” said Cmr. J. Wyatt, "and so will move that we reimburse Cmr. Mcrfette for the amount he is out of pocket.” Seconding the motion, the chairman stressed that members must gain the beard’s authority for all expenditure in the future. The motion was passed unanimously.
