Me s ruth Jllout VITAMINS Of recent years there has grown a great tendency to overemphasize the importance and functions of vitamins in the diet at the expense of other food elements just as important. The six foodstuffs essential to life given in their order of importance are: 1. Carbohydrates 2. Proteins 3. Fats 4. Water 5 . Minerals 6. Vitamins. No one of these is more necessary than any other but first consideration should be given to the first three which are the energy producing and body building group the last three being more in the nature of the regulating group. An eminent authority on nutrition has stated that: “in nutrition the energy producing foodstuffs should receive primary consideration because it is rather unlikely that if a sufficient amount of carbohydrates, proteins and fats are consumed, that the supply of water, minerals and vitamins will be deficient.” The secret of physical well-being is a balanced diet All the essential food elements should receive their proper consideration and the cult for highly vitamised foods at the expense of others equally necessary can only result in an unbalanced diet.
