Northland Roll of Honour
Only son of Mr and Mrs H. F. Menzies, of Rurimoki Road, Whangarei, and husband of Mrs K. Menzies, a theatre sister at the Palmerston North Hospital,, on the staff of which institution she is still serving. Captain John Forbes Menzies has died on service overseas.
Born in 1915, Captain Menzies was educated at the Whangarei Primary School and the Whangarei High School, later attending the Auckland University and the Dunedin Medicfal School. In 1940 he was awarded the Bachelor of Medicine and the Bachelor of Surgery degrees. During 1941. he served as house surgeon at the Palmerston North Hospital. Joining the army as a surgeon in 1941, he was attached to the Tenth Field Ambulance and later to the New Zealand Scottish Battalion. He went overseas to New Caledonia in 1942 and after the battalion was disbanded in July, 1943, he returned to New Zealand for training in the operation of a mobile X-ray unit. In December of last year he was transferred to a casualty clearing station in Guadalcanal-, his death occurring on March 2.
