Intrigue More Powerful
MONTEVIDEO, March 12. The formal resignation of General Ramirez declares that high nationalistic army officers forced him to delegate his powers to Farrell because of the false 1 umour that he intended to declare war on the Axis. Ramirez said that opposition began when Army officers thought Argentina’s rupture with the Axis resulted from pressure from the United States. The text pf the resignation concludes: ‘‘The die was cast. Intrigue was more powerful than reason."
Demonstrate A’gainst. U.S
A Nationalist crowd carrying Argentine. Spanish, Chilean. Paraguayan and Bolivian flags, staged an anti-American demonstration in front of the American Embassy at Buenos Aires, says a correspondent of the New York “Herald-Tribune. Demonstrators hissed and cried: “Down with the Yankees.” ‘‘Farreil, yes—traitors, no.” “Argentine yes, Jews and Yankees no.” Mounted police finally broke up the demonstration. Farrell has assumed the Presidency, succeeding Ramirez, according to the executive secretary, quoted by a Buenos Aires message.
