Baby Carnival To Raise Whangarei Patriotic Funds

The Whangarei District Patriotic Coir-'jnitlee (inter-zcne) yesterday adopted a recommendation from the Women’s Patriotic Activities Committee that the main fund-raising activity to gain Whangarei’s quota of £13,500 should be a “free for all” patriotic baby contest. An advisory committee was established, consisting of Mrs A. Marsden Woods, Messrs W. Jones, J. A. S. MacKay and F. J. Howie. As far as the borough is concerned, the Mayor will convene a meeting of parents, clubs, societies, firms and other organisations as soon as possible.

It was hoped that each riding, Hikurangi, Kamo and Onerahj would sponsor a baby so that semi-final results would show a patriotic baby each from the country, borough, Hikurangi, Kamo, Onerahi. The votes for the semi-final results would be on the basis of the percentages each area which sponsored a patriotic baby was required to contribut to the whole—i.e., each district would conduct its own domestic arrangements according to its own decisions, but moneys received at interzone headquarters for credit to that district’s patriotic baby would be . turned into votes to the value of the accepted percentages. Value Of Votes Thus, for example, Wairua’s votes would be counted at 6d, Maungakara-mea-Mangapai’s at 1/-, Kiripaka at sd, and so on; Whangarei borough would be calculated at 2/101, Hikurangi at 2d. and Onerahi at Id. Even the smallest area has an equal chance for its entrant. The executive recommends that the age be three years or under at date of entry, and that, in the finals, the babies whose parents, with the help of their committees receive the largest number of votes, calculated on the percentage basis as above by date to bo fixed by the advisory committee, will be presented with—first prize £IOO, second £3O, third £lO, fourth and fifth £5 in National Savings bonds. The executive also recommends that as some districts have already commenced their activities for the 1944 patriotic quota all moneys which have been paid in since January 1. 1944, be counted for credit, to that district should it sponsor a patriotic bably in this competition. Entries are sought from parents, clubs, societies, firms, ridings, patriotic committees and other organisations. All Will Assist Mrs Marsden Woods, on behalf of the Women’s Committee, said each area must elect its own committee. Those who had been bearing the heat and burden of the day felt this contest would bring in additional workers. It was hoped to raise the full quota by the one effort,' thus conserving energy. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the recommendations, hoped all districts would support the contest. He felt that those not now subscribing liberally will do so under this scheme and thereby more evenly distribute the burden. At this stage Mr Mac Kay retired, and Mr F. J. Howie was elected chairman. In answer to Mr T. O’Carroll, the secretary said each area would get the credit for the amount raised through the contest. The recommendation was adopted. Amounts To Be Raised The following quotas were allocated by the Whangarei Inter-zone committee to each area in the Whangarei patriotic district for 1944, the quota for 1943 appearing in parentheses: Wairua, £793 (£942); Maungakara-mea-Mangapai. £1585 (£1884), Kiripaka. £660 (£785); HikurangiCtonga, £1453 (£1727); Maunu. £llß9 (£1413); Mangakahia, £660 (£785); Waipu. £705 (£838); Ruakaka, £352 (£418): Manaia, £660 (£785); Whangarei borough. £4558 (£5414); Hikurangi town district. £264 (£314); Kamo, £l9B (£235); Onerahi, £132 (£ls7£ Women’s Committee Kelps The treasurer notified the committee that he had distributed (on paper) the sum of £903 to the ridings and town districts, being their share of activities carried on by the Women’s’ Patriotic Activities Committee.
