Tightening Blockade In Bismarck Area

SYDNEY. Friday

Allied air and naval forces are tightening the blockade of Japanese bases in the Bismarck area. Due to effective neutralisation of the enemy’s air bases in the Admiralty, New Ireland and New Britain groups, the Allies now dominate the sea lanes to the north. This claim is made by General MacArthur’s communique today. The communique reports that our blockading naval vessels, in a sweep through these waters from Solomons bases, sank a north-bound enemy merchantman of 3500 lons laden with troops, as well as another large cargo ship, a destroyer and nine barges. We rescued 73 Japanese survivors. Allied naval units also made a night bombardment of Kavieng, New Ireland, aerodrome and dock areas. Heavy air attacks have bisen maintained on enemy bases in the New Ireland-New Britain area. Rabaul was pounded with 164 tons of bombs, targets being shipping at Keravia Bay and aerodromes. Eight vessels and numerous barges in the bay were hit and two of the vessels were left in flames. There was again no Japanese fighter interception.
