New S, Island Naval Establishment Opened
"This is a unique occasion, as it is the first time a naval establishment has existed ashore in the South Island as an independent command,” said Commander T. S. Critchley, naval officer in charge at Lyttelton, when a training establishment at Lyttelton was commissioned as H.M.S. Tasmaci. "This is a very important day, and it is the duty of all hands to see that this ship is a success. I appeal particularly to those of you who are from the South Island, as it is your show. I want this to be a happy ship, and 1 want to i'eeL that people are pleased to be posted to H.M.S. Tasman. This ail depends on discipline, not by fear of punishment, which is quite foreign to our New Zealand tradition, but by the spirit and endeavour of everyone. We are starting today with a clean sheet. Keep it clean. In appearance, every man and woman here is, in my opinion, beyond reproach, and I want H.FLS. Tasman to be kept like that.” Commander Critchley spoke to officers, ratings and W.R.E.N.S. at divisions yesterday, and afterwards inspected the establishment.
