From 12.1 a.m. on Monday, 17th January, a restricted train service will operate throughout the South Island. The drastic reduction in the passenger train service will necessitate severe restrictions in travel. Permits will be required for all passenger journeys exceeding fifty miles. These permits will only be issued at Railway stations and will be restricted to essential travel. All passenger reservations made for journeys in the South Island are cancelled, and passengers will require to re-book after obtaining the required permit. The restrictions do not apply to passenger travelling in the North Island. Goods of an urgent and essential nature only as specially listed will be accepted for conveyance in the South Island, 35
