Accountant Arrested

(Spec.) WANGANUI. This Dav. A public accountant of Hamilton. Royle Richard Victor Challiner, aged 49, appeared before Mr. J. H. Salmon. S.M., charged that on January 9. at Taihape, lie had in his possession certain circulars dated January 8, 1944 with a view to facilitating the publication of a subversive statement. Detective-Sergeant J. J. Murray, who appeared for the police, asked ’that the defendant be remanded to appear at Hamilton on January 21. In granting the remand the magistrate allowed bail in defendants own recognisance of £SO. a stipulation being that he • report - once daily to fhe Hamilton police. The defendant, for whom Mr. -C.-F.' Treadwell appeared, was arrested on an express train at Taihape early on the morning of Sunday, January 9. The cliarge was iaid under the Public Safety Emergency Regulations, 1940.
