Ships Damaged By Bombers At Timor
SYDNEY. This Day. Air activity in the Timor vicinity is recorded in General MacArthur’s communique today, when a 1200-ton cargo ship off Atapoepoe was attacked, set on fire and left sinking, and a 500-ton freighter off Bauchaue was attacked and damaged. Atamboea village was strafed.
A coastal sweep from Cape Gourdon to Croisilles, in New Guinea, resulted in the sinking of four barges and damage to villages. Our escorted medium and heavy units bombed and strafed enemy installation adjacent to Friedrich Karl Harbour, in the Alexishafen area, dropping 80 tons of explosives on buildings and supply dumps at Amron mission and Nagada plantation, which were damaged, and explosions and fires started.
Air patrols strafed Madang and Alexishafen aerodromes, destroying a parked enemy bomber. Solomons Bombardment
In the Solomons, our naval units effectively bombarded enemy shore installations at Tinputz, Umum and Ruru Eay. A fighter patrol also strafed Tinputz. Our dive-bombers wrecked a bridge over the Puriata River, in the Empress Augusta Baj ? area, and our ground patrols report successful esgagements with parties of the enemy beyond our perimeter. Some six enemy planes raided Sterling Island, in the Treasury Group, under cover of darkness, causing casualties and some damage.
