Argentine Earthquake

BIJENOS AIRES. Jan. 16. II is officially announced that a great number of persons were- killed and injured in a violent earthquake in western Argon lino last night. Preliminary reports indicate heavy damage in San Juan province. Troops and rescue workers at present are digging through wreckage of the almost totally destroyed city of San Juan, searching for survivors cf three earthquakes which last night killed at least 200 and injured thousands. A fourth earthquake at 8 a.m. today destroyed more buildings and hampered rescue work.

One survivor said that San Juan, which is situated high in the Andes, with a population of 30,000, is 00 per cent destroyed. The only important building spared was the Rawson hospital which, however, was evacuated because of its shaky condition.

Heavy loss of life is feared in other towns from which reports have not yet been received because communications are down all over San Juan province. The chief Federal Agent at San Juan (David Uroburu) telegraphed the Argentine Government: “Everything you can do to help, everything s'ou can send us, will be too little bceause nobody knows the magnitude of what has happened.” The earthquake was felt in a broad belt across South America from Buenos Aires to Santiago.
