Bomb Falls On London Cinema, Seven Killed
LONDON, January 17. When a bomb fell on a London suburban cinema last night, seven were killed and 31 injured. A second bomb fell on a big drapery store. Both were ‘Of small calibre, and are believed to have been dropped by a lone raider. The cinema was fairly full, but there was no panic, although the bomb crashed through the roof and fell directly in the centre of the stalls. The audience walked out quietly. Shop-win-dows on both sides of the main, thoroughfare were shattered for a distance of 200 yards. The German plane which dropped a bomb on a cinema apparently reached ' London with a' force of British planes ; returning from Europe, and was therefore most difficult to identify, says the “Evening News.” i Offensive Patrols ; Air activity across the Straits of ■ Dover was limited on Sunday to of- ] fensive patrol in the morning and ■ afternoon by R.A.F. fighters. A small • group of fighters came under antiaircraft fire over Calais area early ifi the afternoon. Gunfire was heard on the south-east coast of England just before fighters were seen returning across the Channel. Later, R.A.F. Typhoons were heard going out towards the French coast, flying very low. Early last night there was little enemy activity over East Anglia. In South-east Anglia, including the London area, bombs were dropped in scattered points. There was some damage, but no one was seriously injured.
