Letters And Photos In Husband’s Box

(Special) AUCKLAND, This Day. Evidence that she had opened a box belonging to her husband and had found letters from and photographs of other women in it was given by Alice Mathews (Mr Vialoux), in support of her petition for divorce from Thomas John Mathews, heard before Mr Justice Finlay yesterday. Petitioner said they were married in 1930, and there were no children. The respondent was a hide and skin merchant, whose business took him away from their home at Whangarei twice a week on an average. “When I decided to leave him I decided lo open his box,” said petitioner. “He had threatened to kill me if I ever did open it.” The letters produced were of recent origin. She had never found out who the woman was, although at one time the woman’s husband telephoned. Her husband snatched the telephone from petilioner while shev was talking to the husband of the woman. A decree nisi was granted.
