Missing Maori Gives Himself Up To Police
One of the two Maoris, suspected of converting several cars to their own use in the Kaitaia and Hukerenui districts, who disappeared into the bush .at Towai on Monday, was arrested this morning. An extensive police search was conducted on Monday afternoon and on Tuesday and Wednesday inquiries were continued. This morning a Maori youth called at the Towai Hotel and informed the licensee that he intended giving himself up to the police, being arrested shortly afterwards by Constable D. C. Muir, one of the police officers concerned with the search.
It is believed that the youth had been hiding in the scrub during the daytime and staying with Maoris in the district at night. Apparently he suffered no effects from his short sojourn in the bush. The other Maori is still missing and inquiries are being pursued. The arrested youth will be charged at the Kawakawa Court.
