Vegetable Dehydration

The former Minister for Agriculture (Mr. J. G. Barclay), referring yesterday to the new dehydration plants for dealing with vegetables and fruit which are being established at Pukekohe, Motueka and Christchurch, said that the Pukekohe building was well on the way to completion. The machinery is on tin* ground ready to be installed. It should be m operation early in the New Year. The Department of Agriculture had put down nearly 1000 acres in the Patumahoe district for growing vegetables. The surplus from Whangarei and also from commercial gardens would be frozen or dehydrated. The dehydration plants would require from 150 to 200 hands when in full swing. The dehydration and freezing of vegetables will act as a balancing factor to decrease waste in the growing of vegetables.
