Necessity For More Women Farm Workers

(Special) AUCKLAND, This Day. Up till recently the supply of workers from the ranks of the Women’s Land Service had not exceeded the demand, stated a circular received at a sitting of the Primary Production Council from the Director of the Fields Division (Mr P. W. Smallfield), but at present there was a considerable surplus of enrolments over vacancies on farms. Women, said Mr. Smallfield, were being used to a considerable extent to take the place of men in industry and he thought it could be fairly stated that agriculture had lagged behind in this respect. It would be necessary for farmers to employ many more girls. A drive by district councils was necessary and it was hoped that they would take active steps to ensure its success. It was decided to send a copy of the circular to district committees.
