Far North Maoris Aid Patriotic Funds

The Maori people of the Mangonui County are raising continuously considerable sums of money towards the County Patriotic Fund. Early in the year the county was sub-divided into several Tribal Committees who undertook to raise during 1943 a quota mutually decided upon. Already more than one of these Tribal Committees has reached its quota and it is expected that all committees will have raised their full quotas before the end of this year. Pukepoto Maori Settlement was the first to reach its quota, and has sent in more than £7O. The Maoris of Kareponia and Merita Bay, who agreed to raise £IOO, far exceeded this sum when they supported a popular girl in the recent contest at Awanui, and they are to be congratulated for their fine effort. The Whangape Maoris have done a fine job of work by raising almost £IOO towards this committee’s funds. The Maoris of Victoria Valley have also reached their agreed quota of £2O. Other committees that are hoping to complete their quotas shortly are Pamapuria, Takahue, Peria, Toa Toa, Parapara and Kenena Tribal Committees. The Herekino Patriotic Committee, which recently concluded its Popular Girl Contest and thus over-raised its quota by nearly £4OO, was considerably helped by the Maoris of Herekino. The Maoris of Ahipara, who are determined to raise £IOO, have most of this in hand already. The Oturu Maoris have aln-ady collected most of their quota, Mangonui Contributions The following donations have been recently received by the county patriotic treasurer: Flower show, Kaitaia W.W.S.A., £6l/6/2; A.N.A. canteen, £SO; picture show given by Mr. Garton and t'nke stall organised by Mrs. J.
