Emden Raiders Shot Down 138 Planes
(8.0. W.) RUGBY, December 12. Large formations of Fortresses and Liberators, escorted by Thunderbolts and Lightnings, in daylight today attacked naval and other installations at Emden, states a U.S.A.A.F. communique. The bombers destroyed 117 enemy planes and 21 fighters. Seventeen bombers and three fighters are missing. It was Emden’s 88th raid. The Press Association’s aviation correspondent says that the Luftwaffe losses indicate that the Germans put up a great force of fighters. It is probably the most severe loss that the Luftwaffe has suffered in daylight since the Germans introduced rocket-firing planes. An Air Ministry communique states .hat Mosquitoes last night, without loss, attacked objectives .in Western Germany. Four enemy aircraft were shot down of a small number which crossed the coast of East Anglia last night. Some flew inland and a few reached the greater London area. Bombs were dropped on a number of places. Damage was caused and casualties are reported.
