U.S. Austrian Battalion, Plus Archdukes, Disbanded

(Rec. 1 p.m.) NEW YORK, Dec. 12. The War Department has announced that the army’s Austrian battalion which has been the centre of controversy since it was planned, has been disbanded because of insufficient volunteers. It is added that three archdukes—Karl, who was a corporal, Felix, a first-class private and Rudolf, a private— were given a choice of another unit or honourable discharges and chose discharges. Archduke Otto, who did not -join the battalion, but recruited volunteers, was accused by the Free Austrian Movement of usine the battalion for a steppingstone for the restoration of the monarchy. The other three archdukes are now subject to induction- into the United States services. : - > .
