In one of his most recent letters home he told now the ship in which a group of prisoners was being taken across the Mediterranean was attacked by bomb and torpedo. Private Ploey was uninjured.

The privations he suffered ca’used Private Hoey much illness and he was taken to a convalescent camp. When in an Italian public hospital he was well treated and fed, but complained of the cold, which at times was intense.
