j Official advice that their youngest json. Private Stanley William Hoey. j died on August 16 while a prisoner oi |war in Camp 57, Northern Italy, has jbeen received by Mr. and Mi’s. James ! Hoey, oi' Kamo. Born at Kamo 35 years jago, Private Hoey was a most promisjing athlete. He was a leading member |of the Kamo Rugby League team. I which won the championship, a goodj 'shot with gun or rifle and a keenl horseman, who competed at many local shows. Prior to entering the army, l he was employed by Mr. Barriball,! painter. His i'rank. open disposition j and ready smile earned him many' friends.
Serving with an Auckland Battalion, Ihe made the famous trek from Syria land fell into enemy hands when using lan anti-tank gun at the battle of El Alamein. In one of his most recent letters home he told now the ship in which a group of prisoners was being taken across the Mediterranean was attacked by bomb and torpedo. Private Ploey was uninjured.
The privations he suffered ca’used Private Hoey much illness and he was taken to a convalescent camp. When in an Italian public hospital he was well treated and fed, but complained of the cold, which at times was intense.
