Believe U-Boat Warfare Will Be Re-opened
NEW YORK, September 27
The belief that the Nazis will re-open U-boat warfare in a final attempt, to forestall the opening of a second front, is expressed by diplomatic quarters who maintain close contact with Germany, says the Istanbul correspondent of the “Herald-Tribune.”
They sa.v Germany has abandoned hope that submarines can starve England into submission, but hope that heavy attacks by technically improved U-boats may make 1 the Allied shipping position as serious as during the last spring, in which event the more cautious Allied leaders might postpone the opening of a second front, thus increasing the friction between the democracies and Russia. Tiie Wehvmacht would withdraw in Russia to a line of approximately the 1941 frontiers. The Nazis would attempt to utilise Allied dissension to persuade the Russians that, since all Soviet territory was liberated and a second front not opened, the Russians would do well to sign an armistice or arrive at a tacit understanding under which the eastern front: offensive would cease. There is no hint so far from Russian quarters of any such arrangement being contemplated. French, S. African Waters The sinking of a large enemy supplyship off the French coast last night is reported. She was attacked by motortorpedo boats of the Netherlands navy, supported by our light coastal ships. A torpedo hit was scored amidships. A report from Capetown announces the sinking of a U-boat in the Indian Ocean. South African aircraft first spotted the submarine off the African coast and attacked it. Later it was spotted on the surface by aircraft, which dropped depth charges. There was an explosion and oil came to the surface.
