(Rec. 1 p.m.) LONDON. Sept. 27. j A horde of Flying Fortresses flung i | down about 1000 tons of bombs against j the German U-boat base of Emden j today. They were accompanied fdr the! first time on the entire round-trip of! 600 miles by Thunderbolt fighters. Many German fighters came up to: |attack the bombers, but were fought! | off. mostly by Thunderbolts. However, j | when German fighters did break! I through. Fortresses overwhelmed them.! | Official figures, when they are issued,! (are likely to show heavy German; I losses. Thunderbolt pi lots from one] | station alone shot down nine planes. I Fortresses, at the greatest height,! iflew in 76 degrees of frost. They! j mounted their bombs in a new manner.! | allowing a greater diversity of bombsland a greater weight in each plane., The load included thousands 'of small j incendiaries. The great force of bomb-! jers employed enabled them to carry| lout area bombing instead of the usual] ! precision bombing. Luftwaffe More Active ! Flying through flak and a swarm of 1 [enemy fighters, United States Marauders] ] delivered another blow against the ] heavily-defended fighter base of Beau-! vais-Tille in the sixth raid on the aerodrome this month. Clouds rendered ob-; servation of results difficult, but the! icrews were certain bombing was in the! target area. Many fighters attacked the! I Marauders and escorting Spitfires had] ; many dog-fights. i The Luftwaffe, which so often in recent! months lias allowed Allied aircraft to at-i tack targets in northern France without; opposition, is showing a disposition to! fight it out. at least over Beauvais. On] returning' from the raid, during which escorting aircraft shot down nine aircraft and damaged many more, a wing com-! mander said the Hun was “fighting like! mad.” Shortly before this raid Mitchells attacked marshalling yards near Rouen, where no opposition was offered Bombers had no difficulty in reaching the target and. despite heavy flak, were able to drop their bombs in a few minutes. Bursts were seen concentrated m the yards and some fell near a bridge ! and locomotive repair shop. Hits were scored by Typhoons in a raid j on Abbeville aerodrome. Five of our aircraft are missing.
