Nothland Roll of honour
Official news was received yesterday' by Mrs. Walter Wakeiin, Whau Valley.! that her fifth son, Private Leo Oliver; Wakeiin. had lost his life at sea on; August 17. 1942. Aged 24. he was born! at Whau Valley, Whangarei, and at-; tended the Whau Valley Primary and; Whangarei High Schools. Upon completing his education he joined his father's stock auctioneering ;business, being engaged on the clerical side, where lie made many friends; | among the clients by his quiet effieilency and willingness to please. Upon; 'his father's death oariy in 1941. he ;became a director of the firm, leaving; jin, the same year with reinforcements; 'for the Middle East. 1-Ie was in the historic trek from : Syria to El Alamein. where he wasi. jposted missing, and later prisoner of war. According to the information now received he lost his life when; being transported to Italy. An enthusiastic follower of all forms, of athietic sport, he nvas also a talented musician, especially on the; piano and accordion. Leo Wakeiin' was well known and popular through-; out the whole of Northland, and his! death will be regretted by a very wide j circle. p ' _ :
