American Soldier Strikes Rich Lode
j (Special) SYDNEY, This Day. An American soldier at a northern battle station claims to have discovered |what may prove one of the richest I lodes ever found in Australia. He spent ibis leave searching for gold and, according to the American Army publication “Yank Down Under," found ore :worth 20,000 dollars a ton. The soldier I who made the find is Private “Bonanza j Bill" Houghton, former hard-rock and Isluice miner of California, now serving with a medical unit. Two American Army officers who were formerly assayers, estimated the value of samples won from an undisclosed location. : Houghton says that he is keeping the 'site of his discovery a secret until after The war, when he intends to stake out his claim. He travelled several hundred miles in his search, carrying all his mining gear and other equipment |on a packhorse. Metallurgists are ! amazed at the estimated richness of the deposits which would mean that the lore must bear 625 ounces of gold to the ton.
