OBITUARY

: With the death yesterday of Mr: : Duncan Alexander Campbell, ol j 1 Waipu, at the age of 70. the district loses one of its most prominent pion- : ; eers and pipers. Mr. Campbell did much to further piping, both in Wha- ; agarci and Waipu, and in his time I competed successfully against many 1 New Zealand piping champions. Born at Waipu in 1873. Mr. Camp-: I bell was the youngest son of Mr. Rob.; j ;:rl Campbell, who came to New Zea--1 land from Nova Scotia on the ship I Margaret, with the Rev. Norman Mc- ! Leod. After receiving education at j the Waipu Cove School, Mr. Campbell; ! bush-contracted for many years with; Mis brothers, Roderick (Rory) Campy I bell, Norman Campbell ( who predey cc-ased him two weeks ago), and the: late Samuel Campbell. The area in! which the four brothers contracted ex-1 •ended from Thames to Northland. During his youth, Mr. Campbell was: an expert at national field games such; as throwing the hammer and tossing, the caber, and also took a great interest in football, at which he was a good wing-three-quarter. One of his: sons (Mr. A. B. Campbell) responding! to his father's encouragement, has played in several All Black trials, and, also represented North Auckand,; Wanganui and the North Island. For many years. Mr. Campbell was Ihe official piper for the Waipu Cale-| tlonian Society, and he founded the' first pipe band at Waipu. Thirty-five years ago, Mr. Campbell married Miss Edith. Hayes, of an old! Whangaroa family, the marriage talc-! ing place in Whangarei. Twelve year? later, Mr. and Mrs. Campbell moved! to Whangarei. where Mr. Campbell; was engaged in carpentering. During! his residence in Whangarei, he taughfi piping to many youths, and assisted in laying the foundations for the Whar.garei and County Pipe Band. His fund of quiet humour won him many friends, young and old. Mr i Campbell established his home till re-! cently in Ilatea Street, from which he; retired three years ago to Waipu! Cove. Surviving him is his wife (Mrs. E.. Campbell), two daughters (Mrs. J.; 1 Willcocks and Mrs. J. Beesley, both of Whangarei). three sons (Messrs. A. B. : Campbell and W. A. Campbell (in the. armed forces), and C. D. Campbell (of the Auckland Training College), one sister (Mrs. L. Kane, Whangarei) and one brother (Mr. Roderick Campbell,; Waipu). : ! The funeral will leave B. R. Miller’s! chapel. Whangarei, for Waipu. at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
