They Still Wander: Prosecutions Indicated

Once again wandering slock occupied the attention oi' the Mangonui County Council at the monthly meeting on Wednesday. A report from the county traffic inspector (Mr. McKenzie) and a letter from Mr. Frost, cn behalf of the Ahipara residents, showed plainly that there is no lessening of the menace in the Mangonui county. The inspector reported that during the month on one occasion he had in the pound 185 head of stock, impounded by tlie Lands Department for trespassing on the west coast. Incidentally, although they were only a short time in the pound, the ground is now a swamp as a result of their presence and the wet weather. Mr. Frost complained that the wandering stock in Ahipara had eaten hedge plants and ether growths they could reach through the hedges. “We find it impossible to raise any permanent hedges,” wrote Mr. Frost. A gate left open meant the destruction of gardens before morning, and he asked that the matter be dealt with as soon as possible. “I would like to see more vigorous action taken about wandering stock," said Cr. Beasley. “One school bus driver in my area has his time-table upset every day because of the time he has to spend chasing wandering stock out of his way. The position is intolerable." Councillors were of the opinion that a few prosecutions would make the stock owners more careful, and the rangers were to be instructed accordingly.
