Control Of Steel
(F.A.) WELLINGTON. This Day. In accordance with recommendations of the British-American steel mission which recently visited New Zealand, Steel Emergency Regulations have been gazetted, initiating comprehensive control over the use of steel in the Dominion, said the Minister for Supply (Mr Sullivan) today. The regulations provide authority for the appointment of a steel controller who, as previously announced, will be the Commissioner for Supply (M; F. R. Picot) and they vest him wifh a function and powers which will enable him to bring into operation the distribution scheme and comprehensive control envisaged by the mission. Bet ails cl' the scheme at present are being finalised and will be announced as soon as possible. The Minister slated that he realised that additional work would be thrown on merchants, manttlacturers and others but unfortunately this could nor be avoided and he appealed for co-operation of all concerned In cne important aspect, control would be advantageous to New Zealand in that it would ensure, as far as supplies permitted, procurement of steel for all essential purposes in the Dominion.
