Second Round Begins In Whangarei Hockey
With close finishes in all games on Saturday, the second round of the Whangarei hockey competitions opened auspiciously in fine weather. With little or nothing between the various teams, the games witnessed were hard and rugged. Ladies’ A Grade Kara Just Get There.—Showing marked improvement, Woclworths just failed to defeat the top-ranking Kara, who as usual played solidly. However, better combination and experience eventually told and Kara ran out winners by five goals to three. For Kara, F. Attwood (4) and E. McKegg were the scorers, while O. Litt (2) and F. Hutton netted for Woolworths. Messrs. G. A. R. McKoy and J. R. Johnson refereed. Ladies’ B Grade .Y.W.C.A. cn Ten.—ln a very even contest, marked by frequent offsides, Y.W.C.A. accounted for Old Girls by the odd goal in five. For Y.W.C.A.. B. Oliver played well, while lor Old Girls T. Wallbank was to the fore. Scorers for Y.W.C.A. were P. Gilbert, R. Best and R. Collier, while J. Leese and N. Hannam netted for Old Girls. Mr. N. Munro had sole control. The Leaders Draw.—Settling down quicker than their opponents, Hikurangi, by forceful play, held a handy two—ml lead halfway through the first spell. Undaunted, Whareora, fighting hard, equalised the score at half-time. Shortly after resumption, Hikurangi took the lead, which was quickly lost when Whareora scored from a penalty corner. From then cn a battle royal was witnessed, taut neither side could add to its tally. R. Johnson, Hikurangi’s goalie, played a sound game, while A. McDonald shone out for Whareora. For Hikurangi, D. Williams (2) and A. Cochrane scored, while L. Pohe, J. Wrack and A. McClennon scored for Whareora. Messrs. N. Munro and R. Nixey umpired. United’s Early Victory.—Catching the defence napping, United scored two runaway goals in the first two minutes of play, and from then on played a sound defensive game, allowing School to score only once. For United, E. Pitman scored twice, and D. Davison netted for School. Mr. F. Primmer controlled the game.
Air Fcrce Again.—Playing against a depleted Army team, consisting of seven players, Air Force carried off the honours by three goals to one. Although four short, Army played well, but could not hope to ward off the unbeaten Air Force team. McKenzie (2) and McCown scored for Air Force, while Lennox netted for Army. Messrs. J. R. Johnson and R. Nixey umpired. Army A Downed.—Securing a goal in the first five minutes, Mangapai early took control and although no further score eventuated in the first half they held the territorial advantage. In the second spell a further two goals by Mar.gapai put the issue beyond doubt, and, try as hard as they could, Army could not penetrate the sound defence. For Mangapai, M. Carter (2) and A. Lornie scored. Messrs. G. A'. R. McKoy and F, Primmer refereed.
