Whangarei’s Tragic Experience
THE tragic accident which occurred in Whangarei this morning must have brought home to citizens the farreaching nature of the war that has scourged the world for over three years. Not in the actual battle zones alone is toll of life and limb being taken; in lands far removed from scenes of combat, casualties attributable to the war are continually occurring. In so far as these casualties result from service to country, the victims are entitled to inclusion in their nation's roll of honour. The two men who gave their lives this morning were co-operating in a campaign designed to help New Zealand’s war effort, and, in that way, were assisting New Zealand comrades in the battle line in the Pacific, in the Mediterranean and over Europe and Asia generally. They have therefore made the supreme sacrifice in the cause of freedom, and their offering is a sacred one. To the people of Whangarei today’s accident will long remain a personal significance, and the sympathy which will go out to bereaved relatives will be of the sincerest nature.
