Probation For Farmhand On Fraud Charge
Incurring of a debt of £7/6/1 for board and lodging at the Kamo Hotel, thereby obtaining credit by fraud, was admitted by Desmond Ashford Simmonds, 27. farmhand, of Kaukaoakapa. when he appeared in the Whangarei Court today. A charge of being' idle and disorderly, with insufficient means of support, was withdrawn by the police. Simmonds was employed as a farm-hand at Kaukapakaoa and had gone to the Kamo Hotel on May 5, representing himself to be a farmer of Helensville. When he was leaving the hotel it was found that he had no money and had had none when he arrived there. His employer was willing to take him back. Simmonds appeared to be slightly mentally weak. “I don't know what to think about you,” said the magistrate (Mr. Raymond Ferner). “If you persist in this kind of thing you will find yourself in serious trouble.” Simmonds was placed on probation for 18 months and ordered to make restitution of £7/6/1 and pay 10/- court costs.
