Competition Results
Our Maori Place Names competition was rather harder this time, and entries were not many. As you know, there is often more than one version of a Maori name, but for the marking of competitions like this, I must take the meanings given when the competition is set. According to that, two Northlanders had two errors, and that was the nearest to correct. They get the halfcrown prizes—Billy Thompson, Victoria Valley, R.D.. Kaitaia; Lindsay While, Victoria Valley. R.D., Kaitaia. Certificates of Merit go to Jean and Margaret Finlayson, Pipiwai; Joan Clarkson, Titoki; Gloria Panther, Victoria Valley.
CORRECT LIST OF MEANINGS Tangiteroria, the sound of the tide-bore; Tangowahine. taking a woman (in a raid); Tauraroa, long rope; Onerahi, big sand; Whangaroa, a long wait; Tauranga, a landing place; Kororareka, the sweet penguin; Kukuparere, the flying pigeon; Whenuapai, good earth or land; Maromaku, wet apron; Ruapekapeka, the bats’ cave; Wairere, flowing water.
