Living Space To Be Rationed

(Special) AUCKLAND, This Day. Similar lo the system adopted in the Case of Slate houses, living space is to be rationed in New Zealand according to a message from Wellington. It is stated that when the exigencies of the defence programme permit cf the transfer of men and materials to civil employment, .rationing will bo applied (o private building. Sleeping accommodatio'h will be (he basis on which the needs of a family intending to occupy a residence is to be judged. In a two bedroom house, for example, the aggregate floor space allowed will probably bo about 1145 square feet. This area would allow a living room 16ft by 14ft. a dining room 14ft by 12ft. a kitchen 10ft by Bft, a bedroom 15ft by 15ft. a second bedroom 14ft by 12ft, a vestibule or passage, bathroom, laundry and other offices of a total of 280 square feet. The only additional space allowed would be for extra bedrooms based on present or immediately foreseen needs cf a family.
