Bright Novelties At Whangarei Movie Ball

Attracting a good crowd and providing select entertainment, Friday night’s Movie Ball gave Whangarei residents and visitors a treat in both modern and old time dancing. Evening dress was evident, everywhere, while the predominating number oi' uniforms lent, a military touch. All forces were represented, including men from the U.S.M.C. Viewed from the balcony the floor of the Town Hall was a gay and charming sight, the swirling multi-coloured skirts of the ladies contrasting with the uniforms and darker clothes of the men. 3he floor was in splendid condition, and made for easy dancing, being particularly suited to the rhythm of the modern dance. Music provided by Alan Ford’s dance band found favour. Tin* organisation throughout was splendid, and tribute must be paid to the committee responsible. An excellent supper was provided, and thanks were also due to the ladies who assisted in this direction. Several sittings were necessary, but all were assured of plenty. Foxtrot Competition Perhaps the most interesting of the attractive novelties was the slow fox-trot competition. During three intervals of dancing judges chose the four best dancers. Those then gave individual exhibitions, dancing two rounds cf the floor. All the grace and balance of the foxtrot was evident and competition was extremely close. A semi-final was held between Mr L. Penney and partner and Mr McGregor and partner. Mr McGregor and Miss McCarthy finally took the prize. The' spot waltz was won by P. F. C. Henny Jones and partner, and a sudden death' Mcnte Carlo by Major Anderson and partner. In a statute waltz partners held positions for apparently long periods while ruthless judges picked their quarry The winners wore 2nd.-Lieut Newson and Miss B. Hayward. Mr L. Cooke was M.C. During the evening the manager of the Plaza Theatre (Mr A. Grant) thanked those present for their attendance. Takings were good and will considerably benefit patriotic funds. The dance was sponsored by combined hotels and picture interests.
