Westfield Girls On Strike; Dislike Working Companion
(Special) AUCKLAND, This Day. A mass meeting of Westfield workers yestedray supported the aattitude of 33 girls in the casing shels in refusing tc work because of the employment of a certain girl in the department The meeting, which was attended by £OO of the 2000 employees at the works, passed a resolution requesting the management to withdraw the girl, who was transferred from cannery to when friction between her and other which she was sent seven months ago hands occurred.
The girls ceased work last Friday after the management refused to comply with the request that the girl be not employed in their department, and, while they have attended the works daily since then, have done no work.
An official of the company states that when the trouble occurred the management got in touch with the union officials, who considered the girls were in the wrong and endeavoured, without success, to get them to go back to work. They also got in touch with the Manpower Department and the Wages Commissioner (Mr C. L-. Hunter), who expressed the view strongly that the girls were wrong in their attitude. He also endeavoured, success, to induce the girls to return to work.
