News Of The Day

Year’s Quota in Week After but one week of intensive collecting, culminating in a monster gala carnival on Saturday and a dance on Saturday night, Fahiatua exceeded its quota of £3400 for the 1943 patriotic appeal. Over £I2OO resulted from Saturday’s carnival. The collection of such a large sum within a week is a record for the district.

Onerahi Bring and Buy A most successful bring and buy was held at Onerahi on Saturday afternoon last, by the local supporters of Mrs. G. M. Bartlett, assisted by her coworkers from Whangarei. The stalls were many and varied, with bountiful supply in each section, there being produce, cakes, fancy work, preserves, flowers, ice cream, soft drinks and sweets. Other attractions (were afternoon teas, nail driving, raffles, a Dutch auction and a very popular sideshow. The stalls were cleared at a comparatively early hour and the returns proved a most welcome addition to the funds of the Fighting Forces’ Army Mothers’ Appeal.

Ducks Attack Crops Complaints have lately been made by farmers in parts of the EJlesmere County about' wild ducks in large numbers feeding on crops of barley and other grain (which have been wind-rowed in readiness for threshing by the pick-up machine. One farmer said that his paddock was literally (hack with ducks in the evenings, and that he had been obliged to resort to means of scaring them away. With wet weather constantly delaying threshing work the damage to crops ig likely to become serious. Fields of garden varieties of peas are also being damaged in some localities. *** * ■ The Colt “The trouble,” said the lounger in the greasy grey suit, lifting his “handle” to his mouth, “the trouble is that they make young colts like that chap over there, at the end of the bar, officers. Been nowhere, seen nothing, absolutely nothing. Then, still wet behind the ears, they give themselves airs.” The barman polished a glass and agreed it twas all wrong. The “young colt” at the end of the bar didn’t hear—perhaps he didn't want to hear. He was Robin Miller, senior official war correspondent for New Zealand, back from Greece, Crete, two Libyan campaigns, two tours of duty in the Pacific and Guadalcanal'! tt * * * Druids’ Lodge The first of their popular monthly dances was held by the Druids’ Lodge on Saturday evening in the Parochial Hall. As usual a large crowd was present. It was unfortunate that Mrs. McLennan and two members of the orchestra were indisposed, and the thanks of the lodge were extended to those musicians who kindly came forward at short notice. Bro. A. C. Bevington was a very capable M.C. and a plentiful supper was prepared by the ladies. The 10/- lucky prize was won by a member of the forces. The prize of £1 went to Mr. N. H. Wilkinson. of Kamo, and the Monte Carlo was won by Mrs. Sketchley and partner.

Y.W.C.A. Sports Day The sports day which was organised by the Y.W.C.A. in aid of the Fighting Forces’ Mothers’ Appeal (Mrs. F. J. Wilson) was held at Rugby Park on Saturday. Nineteen teams took part in the marching and games, and the team points cup was awarded to J. W. Court, Ltd., A, and Selwvn House, with 15 points each, who will hold the trophy for six months each. The marching cup was awarded jointly to the W.W.S.A. A team. The president of the association (Mrs. W. J. Court) received the guest of honour, Mrs. F. J. Wilson. Mrs. Jones, before presenting the trophies, complimented the girls on the way they had played the games and hoped that as they went through life they would play the game of life just as splendidly. They were presented with flowers on behalf of the sports girls.
