Whangarei To-Have Open Shoot Season
The largest meeting of members of the Whangarei Acclimatisation Society for some years last evening decided by an overwhelming majority to have an open season this year. Last season was the first time the season had been closed for many years. Addressing the meeting on the question of whether the season should be open or closed, the president, Mr. S. J. Snow, appealed to members, before making a decision to set aside their own personal reasons and to view the question on the basis of the society’s welfare. He pointed out that ammunition would not be available and if Whangarei declared an open season it would be the only society in the Northland federation to do so, the other three societies in the area, Bay of Islands, Mangonui and Hobson, having decided in favour of a closed season. Dates, Limit Bags
The meeting, however, decided almost unanimously that the season should be open. The season for waterfowl was fixed as from May 1 to May 1C inclusive, while the determination
of the season for other game was left to the council for immediate decision.
Limit bags for the year were fixed at six pheasants, 15 ducks and 25 quail, with a total bag of 25 mixed game. The only reduction was' in respect of pheasants. the previous limit bag being eight. The opinion iwas expressed at the meeting that many shooters had more ammunition than they required and the society appealed to those with surpluses above their needs to hand in the extra supplies for distribution to less fortunate licence-holders. Members at the meeting promised 19 boxes.
