United Nations To Strike Japan Through China

(Roc. 1 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 19. President Roosevelt re-emphasised that the United Nations intended to use China actively as a base for attacking Japan, and reiterated the intention of the army and navy leaders to cut Japan’s lengthening supplyline near the top, using China itself as a base for operations more and more as the war progresses. He added this means hitting Japan in the Japanese islands. Everybody in Washington is pledged to a definite policy in making China one of the most important bases, if not the most important base, of operations against Japan as soon as possible.

A reporter asked Mr. Roosevelt if he had any suggestions regarding current legislation designed to reduce the size of the army. He replied that the goal of 7.500,000 for the army and a total of 11,000.000 for all services had been dictated by military necessity, and would not be charged.
