Rehabilitation Allowances For Discharged Soldiers
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Rehabilitation allowances to provide for servicemen to follow their discharge from the forces and cessation of service pay were announced last night by the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser). The maximum weekly allowances which will be payable for a period up to 13 weeks are as follows: Single man £3/10/-, married man with wife only £4/10/-, married man with wife and one chlid £4/16/-, manned man with Wife and two children £5/2/-. married man with wife and three children £5/8/-, married man with wife and four children £5/14/-, married man with wife and five children (maximum rate) £6. The above allowances are free from national and Social Security Taxes.
The Prime Minister said that these rehabilitation allowances would assist servicemen during the period following stoppage of service pay and pending their placement in suitable employment or granting of an appropriate war pension.
Pension Rights Remain
The scheme, however, Would in no way affect soldiers’ present rights under war pensions legislation and he could' receive rehabilitation allowance or war pension, whichever grant was of the greater value over the period specified. Arrangements have been made for men whose service pay was to terminate on or after March 1 to be contacted by departmental officers. Servicemen whose service pay had already ceased could apply for rehabilitation allowance if they had not already been absorbed into work or placed on a war pension.
