Hora Hora Concert At End Of School Year
Concluding another year’s school life the break-up ceremony held on Thursday at the Hora Hora School provided novel entertainment for a good-sized crowd of parents and friends. The chairman of the committee (Mr. J. G Draper) praised children and staff for the way they had worked during the year. As proof of the ability of children of the Hora Hora School, Mr. Draper gave instances of former pupils who have claimed high honours at the Whangarei High School. Hora Hora was most fortunate, he said, in possessing grounds which were the envy of most public schools in the Dominion, The grounds were always kept in beautiful condition, and were a tribute to all concerned. Mr. Draper made mention of the valuable work done by the ladies’ committee during the year. At any meeting such as the break-up ceremony they had been ready to cater for guests, and generally helped the school social life considerably. Courteous Pupils In reviewing the school year, Mr. Draper said he had been especially struck by the courteous behaviour of the children. This year schoolchildren had attended several functions in the town and at these the Hora Hora pupils had been remarked on for their conduct. Thanks was extended to the borough council for the part they had played in making the year a pleasant one.
The Mayor (Mr. W. Jones), replying, said he thought it the duty of the council to look after the children, who, after all, were the future leaders of the nation. He called the children’s attention to the conditions being experienced by those in countries afflicted by the war, and asked them to always do what they could to alleviate the suffering of these unfortunates. He congratulated them on the progress they had made during the year, especially under the present difficult conditions.
Pupils’ Concert
A splendid concert programme was given on the greensward, and in perfect weather. Both tiny tots and senior pupils were seen in folk dancing and drill displays, while choral singing and dancing items were of a high standard. Three Maori girls gave a number of items, most of them part singing. The children obviously enjoyed the programme as much as the parents, entering whole-heartedly into the spirit of the afternoon.
The entire school massed to sing the New Zealand National Anthem and “God Save the King.”
