Calf Club Helps Patriotic Funds

The first, calf club parade for 1942 was held at Mangapai yesterday. School children decided that adults attending should contribute to the war effort, and a produce stall, under the direction of Betty Hartnell. Dawn Ringham and Margaret McCullough, did brisk business. As good measure a school show of work was also on exhibition. The judge was Mr K. M. Stevens. Results:— Calf rearing: lan Thomas 1, Betty Hartnell 2, Richard Byles 3, Henry Hartnell and Cyril Hartnell 4. Dairy Type, light breeds: Richard Byles 1, Henry Hartnell 2, Betty Hartnell 3. Dairy type, heavy breeds: Cyril Hartnell 1, lan Thomas 2. Children’s judging: Cyril Hartnell 1, Ray Cavaye 2. Adult judging: Mrs Hartnell 1, Mrs Walters 2. S. Ormandy 3. ADULT INTEREST Springfield school has a roll number of nine and eight calves wore paraded and everybody in Springfield was present at the parade. The judge was Mr H. Hawken, who handed over the dairy type judging to the president of the Northern Wairoa Calf Club (Mr. F. Johanson). Mr. Johansen’s demonstration was followed with keen interest. A visitor from Dargaville was Mr F. Crawford (brother of the late Mr H. W. Crawford who was in a great measure responsible for the launching of the Calf Club movement in Whangarei district). Mr Crawford, in the final address, stated that he had learned something from the practical demonstration that day by both judges.
