Northland Roll of honour

CORP. STUART McKINNON Confirmation of the news of the death overseas of Corporal Stuart McKinnon has now been received. Deceased joined up with a coastal battery on the outbreak of war, and later transferred to the Royal New Zealand Air Force. He was keenly interested in navigation, and left for Canada to train as an observer. The circumstances of Corporal McKinnon’s death were vividly reported by one of his colleagues in a recent letter.

“ . . . three of our planes did not return. Two landed at other aerodromes, but the third did not report at all. We have searched the whole of New Brunswick, assisted by American planes from Maine, and the missing plane must now be presumed lose. I’m afraid it went into the sea, due to engine trouble or bad -icing conditions during Monday night’s storm.”

Over two months later, the body of Corporal McKinnon was recovered from the sea, and buried at Shediae, New Brunswick. The deceased airman was the youngest son of the late Mr James McKinnon, first town clerk of Whangarei, and also a former secretary of the Wliangarei Harbour Board and Whangarei High School Board. He was a nephew of Mr Charles McKinnon, of Kaitaia.
