U.S. Bomb Formosa
(Rec. noon.) CHUNGKING, Aug. 12. The United Press reports that Allied planes, presumably American, bombed Formosa today. A communique from General Stilwell’s headquarters says American planes bombed a Japanese aerodrome at Nanchang. They shot down one enemy plane and probably another, scored hits on an airfield and one directly on a hangar.. The Chinese High Command reports continued fighting around Linchwan. Japanese attacks on the western suburbs were repulsed. The Japanese garrison at Chuhsien has received 2000 reinforcements. They have pushed northward under cover of planes and are now engaged by the Chinese. • Got In First American bombers in a big-scale raid, dumped, tons of bombs on enemy military objectives at Canton. They blasted docks and warehouses along the Pearl River and scored direct hits on a Japanese aerodrome, and probably destroyed 15 bombers parked on a field. A United Press correspondent says the attack was designed tq cripple a big striking force the Japanese had been building to attack the United States Air Force. American bombers also blasted Japanese installations, barracks, aerodromes, runways, hangars and railway stations at Nanchang and Yochow. The Americans shot down three Japanese planes attempting interception in the vicinity of Nanchang. The United Press correspondent is of the opinion that the attacks on Japanese bases along a 600-mile front from Hankow' to Canton were undoubtedly partially designed as a diversion to prevent the Japanese from rushing aerial reinforcements to the Solomons.
