Australian Retail Prices Increase 15 P.C.
(Rec. 2 p.m.) CANBERRA, This Day
Retail prices in Australia have increased by 15 per cent, since the outbreak of war. said the Prices Commissioner (Professor Copland). Increased prices were inevitable in 'wartime, he added. It was wrong to assume, however, that because some prices had risen profiteering existed. Now that civilian production had to be severely reduced, the greatest pressure for inflationary price rises would become more and more vital for the protection of consumers. It was the job of his department to see that increases in prices were commensurate with unavoidable increases in cost.
