Leahy Praises Petain, Who Is Persecuted
WASHINGTON, June 10
The United States Ambassador to Vichy (Admiral Leahy) declared that the French people wefe overwhelmingly pro-American and hope for an Axis defeat.
Admiral Leahy expressed admiration for Marshal Petain, but asserted that the latter was “under constant cruel pressure from the invaders, which makes it extremely difficult for him to accomplish as much as he wishes to do for the relief of France.” He added that the United States should continue to give the French people every practicable assistance provided it does not benefit the Axis Powers.
Repression Measures
Sixty-three De Gauilists have been deprived of their nationality. Fiftyone are officers serving with the Free French forces.
Jews in Occupied France are ordered to wear the yellow star of David, on which is the inscription “Jew.” Two terrorists, who escaped, shot and killed a former Communist, Joseph Louer, who became a follower of Doriot.
The shooting occurred at Louer’s home at Nantes.
